The H-Notch Jig

The H-Notch Corner is one of the simplest to construct but, to do so effectively requires the use of a jig that you can build yourself or purchase from Glu-Lam-Log. The jig determines the length of the tail, angle of the cuts, and width of the notch. A more detailed sketch of this jig is located on page 4 of this section.

Slide the jig all the way on to the log, until it hits the stop. Make sure the jig fits snugly. The top of the jig is used to notch the tongue side of the log. The bottom of the jig is used to notch the groove side of the log.

Note:
You must determine if the log you are notching is for a right corner or left corner of the house. For right hand corners, put the jig on the right hand end of the log as viewed from the exterior profile side of the log. For left corners, put the jig on the left hand end of the log. A left hand corner is shown.

Hint:
Temporarily tacking the jig in place with a small screw makes the jig easier.
