Glu-Lam-Log Corner Construction Guide Available

For years, we've been talking about the "Logs Only" approach to log home building and how much money you save when compared to building with kits. During that time, hundreds of quality homes have been successfully and economically built with our logs.

Up to now, we have deliberately avoided publishing any detailed instructions on how to build with our logs because we've found that each builder or do-it-yourselfer we've talked with has had his or her own ideas of how to do things right. We haven't always agreed but, for the most part, the approaches have been sound. In fact, we have learned from many of them.

Still, the numbers of requests for guidance on how to build corners keep mounting because sometimes it really is a bit difficult to visualize how corners go together. This has been especially true with home owners who want to tackle the job themselves or with frame builders who have never built with logs. Even among experienced log home builders, who are used to working with kits, there has been some confusion about how to cut and construct corners quickly and economically at the building site.

In response to these requests, we've put together a Step By Step Corner Construction Guide that uses sketches to walk you through the construction of three common corner configurations: Butt and Pass Corners, Finished Corners, and H-Notch Corners. All corners can be built with tools that are commonly available at any building site.

As you read the Guide, please keep the following important things in mind:

  • The Guide is conceptual in its approach and takes into consideration the consensus of the builders we deal with. It is specifically designed to help you visualize how corners are constructed and you don't have to be an engineer to use it. It features simple sketches that walk you through the process step by step. If you still have questions, feel free to call us and we'll walk you through the steps verbally.
  • The Guide is not meant to be a construction manual and it recognizes that many builders have their own time proven variations of the approaches shown. If you've got an approach that works for you, use it. If you think you can improve on what we've shown, let us know.
  • While many home owners have successfully stacked their logs, we highly recommend that construction be done by an experienced and qualified log home builder.
  • Our logs are very dry and, therefore, lighter weight than most. However, they are still heavy and bulky. Also, the tools used in log home construction can be dangerous. So, please, take your time and always pay attention to safety on the job site.

Copies of the Guide are in the process of being added to our website in the Construction Tips section.

Printed copies of the Corner Construction Guide are available for immediate delivery. Just call us at (406) 777-3219 or fill out the information request form.
